The solar solution
Jul 21st
Hi. Matt back
I installed solar panels in my house and I have made big savings on my energy bills. There is absolutely no reason why you can’t do the same

There are many misconceptions about solar power, most of them originating back in the days when solar power was being developed, and sure, there were problems. However don’t be fooled by misconceptions like solar power is uneconomic, that it’s only relevant in hot dry countries, that it is a poor substitute for traditional electricity. I’m sure you’ve met the doubting Thomas’s. The truth is that huge technological advances have been made in alternative energy research, especially with regard to solar power.

Solar panels are now common place in homes, in offices and in industrial buildings. Solar power is used to operate street lighting, road signs and environment monitoring equipment at a fraction of the cost of traditional electricity.
The term solar power is used to describe a number of methods of harnessing the suns energy to generate electricity. With fossil fuel sources running out and environmental concerns are at the fore solar power has come of age.
There are two types of solar power:
Solar electric power- This uses photovoltaic cells to convert solar radiation into electricity that is stored until needed.
Solar thermal energy is where the sun’s energy is used to heat water which is pumped into solar panels and heated and then stored for later use. The water will stay hot for around 24 hours.
Solar panels are usually fitted to the roof and work during daylight hours. However with a new house being built from the ground-up it may be possible to integrate them more seamlessly into the house. It is a misconception that solar panels only work with direct sunlight and solar power collectors can heat water on a very cloudy day. While solar power will not usually completely support a central heating system or provide enough electricity for all a home’s requirements, a substantial supply of power or domestic hot water can be provided.
I really hope that you make the leap. You won’t regret it. I certainly don’t

Solar panels for the home
Jul 21st
This site is about how I have saved a significant amount of money by installing solar panels in the home.
For years we have taken it for granted that when we hit the switch the power will come on. We boil full kettles to make one cup of coffee, we leave the geyser on full and use the washing machine to wash half loads. The fact is however that the fuels used to generate electricity are finite, and they’re running out. It’s also becoming more and more expensive to extract them. So if you think your energy bill is high now, wait another five years!
I discovered that most of my electrical appliances could run on solar power generated from solar panels installed in the home. There are a number of solar savings that can be made.
Solar cookers have become popular of late. The conventional electric cooker uses a ton of power.
Solar generators use photovoltaic cells to convert solar energy into electrical current on which you can run all your appliances. The generator operates using the suns energy to store power. As long as there is sunlight, the generator is running, and it costs you nothing.
Solar heating systems ensure provide your house with hot water without the need to leave the geyser on 24/7.
Its not difficult, its relatively cheap, and if you can have a great deal of fun doing it. I personally get a great kick from having converted my house to solar. I’m not an active tree hugger, but I do share the concern for the environment

How I saved 80% on my energy bill
Jul 21st
Whatever our unique differences we all want to save money, right! Credit crunch, redundancies, interest rates, and the list goes on, means that we need to get more bounce for our buck. We need to make money go further.
If you’re like me you dread month end when its time to pay those bills. One significant saving that can be made is your energy bill. Most of us have already taken measures to reduce our carbon footprint. Little measures like turning off unwanted lights, switching off electrical equipment like TV’s etc when they’re not in use can result in noticeable savings over time.
Then came the power efficient incandescent bulbs replacing the old very energy inefficient ones we have used for decades. Sure the light isn’t quite as good, but you soon adjust. There is also an assortment of energy monitoring and saving devices that help you save more power.
You however finally reach the stage when you have done everything you can think of to reduce power, but the bill is still high. Where to from here. As a DIY enthusiast I’ve been very interested in alternate energy sources for some time, so I decided to find out more. I was stunned to find that you can save up to 80% of your power bill by installing solar panels. That’s a big saving in any language. However, there’s always a catch, and here it was price-they were expensive; very expensive.
However I’m half Irish and as stubborn as a mule so I persisted. I eventually confirmed what I’d always suspected-the solar panel suppliers were ripping us off making huge margins. They try and confuse us with technical jargon, but the bottom line is- ITS NOT ROCKET SCIENCE.
In fact I was really surprised how easy it is to instal your own power supply.

Hi Matt here
Thank you for visiting my site.
I’m a little unusual in that I LOVE DIY, and over the years it has saved me a fortune. My wife and I bought a run down old farm house and renovated it into our home.
Whilst we are not active “tree huggers” we share a real concern for the environment and so decided that we would “go green”. I wanted the most energy efficient house I could come up with.
I you too want to save energy and money, I urge you to read on.
